ABSTRACT
While the successful handling of studio work contingencies allows the free-lance musician opportunities to acquire and retain valuables, his commitment is also linked to the power and prestige that he enjoys. Considerable tension and intrigue center around reducing those aspects of the occupational scene which threaten his personal sense of dignity, exercising control over the hiring procedures, getting a step ahead of colleague competitors, and escaping from studio dirty work.
