ABSTRACT

SO FAR as the idea of progress is concerned, any chapter on the Renaissance must bear comparison with the chapter that Dr. Johnson called to friends’ attention—one in a book titled The Natural History of Iceland. Johnson declared that he committed the entire chapter to memory inasmuch as it consisted of but a single sentence: “There are no snakes to be met with throughout the whole island.”
