ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the use of a national probability sample of college and university faculty collected by the National Center for Education Statistics. It identifies the determinants of faculty research productivity and aims to determine whether there are systematic differences in the determinants across types of institutions and demographic subgroups of faculty. The chapter provides faculty productivity that suggest that the characteristics of individual faculty interact with institutional characteristics to determine faculty research productivity. A good deal has been written about faculty productivity, usually measured by the number of publications in refereed journals, books, and/or the number of citations of those publications by discipline, by type of educational institution, and at various stages of the life cycle. Several types of challenges confront Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Administrative and staff challenges including funding; and faculty challenges, including competition from Historically White Colleges and Universities to attract and retain faculty talent.
