ABSTRACT

333THOUGH THIS BOOK has been about the status of mental health care as a social matter, the issues we have addressed would not arise at all were treatment not a profoundly personal matter. Choosing a therapist—or choosing to leave or change therapists—rightly seems to most people a weighty matter. The therapist will shape how a patient views some significant portion of her life. The influence of therapy on a patient’s life can be wide-ranging and fundamental. This book has several messages for individuals who are choosing a therapist or reevaluating their therapy.
