ABSTRACT

Another good reason to look for recurring parts in characters is that recurring parts sometimes indicate that characters have related pronunciations. The characters 小 (xiFo) small, little and 少 (shFo) few have in common the radical 小, and they also have similar pronunciations. Recurring parts may indicate similar pronunciations even when the recurring part is not the radical. We have already learned two pairs of characters which share recurring parts that are not the radical and which have identical pronunciations: 那 (nà) that and 哪 (nF) which, and 他 (tA) he, him and 她 (tA) she, her. A recurring part does not necessarily indicate similar pronunciations, however. For example, 也 is pronounced very differently from 他 and 她.
