ABSTRACT
Although 有的 and 一 xiB can both be translated with the English word some they are not used in the same way. 有的 + N must occur before the verb, either as the subject or as the topic of the sentence. In addition, 有的 + N implies some comparison with other nouns. When Xiao Gao says 有的字我不会 xiG in the dialogue in Lesson 10 she is implying that there were characters that she was able to write. 一 xiB + N can occur before or after the verb, and it does not imply any comparison with other nouns.
