ABSTRACT

We have seen that the Middle Ages — apart from Marsiglio's discussion of 'parts' of the state - produced no theory of the nature of guilds or their place in human society and polity. Such a theory was first developed by Bodin and, following on from him, Althusius and a succession of German writers, above all Justus Möser.
