ABSTRACT
The journey to the East and to the river Main was Goethe’s last considerable undertaking. In the summer of 1816, a year after his parting from Marianne, he decides to make one further attempt to see her, and he sets out with Meyer, but the carriage comes to grief on the still appallingly neglected Weimar roads; Meyer is cut about the head, and they turn back.
