ABSTRACT

In the Hebrew scriptures there is a figure called “Wisdom.” The word means many things, especially in the various books of Wisdom, but it is often a personification of characteristics of God. It is a feminine noun and the personified Wisdom is often a feminine person. Scripture scholars reflect these aspects of Wisdom today when they refer to her as Lady Wisdom. Father Roland Murphy of the Carmelite order in an important presidential address to the Society for Biblical Literature, argues persuasively that Lady Wisdom represents God as God invites us through the beauty of creation. God is not only the One who creates everything, but also the one who appeals to our hungers with the beauty that has been created. Steven Spielberg perceived a brilliant contrast between Lionel Barry more and Audrey Hepburn, between the God who creates and the God who invites.
