ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys some of the theological themes that have emerged in the discourse that has occurred over the last twenty-five years in order to assess the current state of the question. It focuses on several of the pertinent, post-Holocaust, theological issues, has suggested what theologians are discussing, and has isolated such theological perspectives as those revolving around fulfillment, continuity/discontinuity, and covenant, which have caused such contentious debates. A Christian theology that glosses over the complex religious and geopolitical fact of Israel by only using the term "Judaism" in an imprecise or abstract way and ignoring the historical reality. A commitment to interactive theological dialogue may demand a radical hermeneutic that can help support this emerging religious reexamination, which in turn could help reinforce a new social ethic. The Jewish-Christian dialogue is currently reshaping Christian identity because it has demanded that theologians go back to the basics.
