ABSTRACT
The front shifted farther and farther west. The Russians reached Lemberg, Przemysl was besieged. We were behind the Russian line. The same girls who had smiled at Austrian officers on the sidewalks now smiled at Russian officers. Life bloomed again. Some lines of business even had a boom: restaurants, cafés, and especially brothels were packed. The bakeries also worked at full speed. They supplied bread to the Russian Army and did a good business.
