ABSTRACT

What Wittels calls "a preconceived op in ion / ' although this "might sound somewhat disreputable to many scientists/' is no more than an intui t ion or at most a hypothesis, and there is nothing at all disreputable about having intuitions and formulating hypotheses. But the claim that Freud approached a single case w i t h a preconceived opinion or a hypothesis and then reflected on that case un t i l his opinion or hypothesis could be seen to be right is simply false.
