ABSTRACT

Many of us have heard other philosophers and nonphilosophers explain i n what way many cases are supposed to be different. Two points i n particular are made frequently. First, i t is said that forgetting, misspeaking, miswri t ing, mislaying, and the rest are due to distraction or tiredness. But that is l ike saying that dreams are due to some such disturbance as an alarm clock going off. The question remains why we dreamed what we d id dream, or why we forgot this name or word rather than that, or why we made this mistake or mislaid that object.
