ABSTRACT

To understand humanity, including our own minds as w e l l as those of others, i t w i l l not do to concentrate largely on rats or laboratory tests; i t is important to take into account literature, art, and religion, as w e l l as philosophy, psychology, and the human pursuit of other sciences. I t is one of Freud's great merits that he felt this and, l ike no other psychologist before h im, except Nietzsche, who was not a professional psychologist, constantly kept literature, art, and religion i n mind .
