ABSTRACT

Philosophy furnishes ample material for case studies, a l lowing us to discover the minds of philosophers and to show how an understanding of their mentality illuminates their work. Otherwise, twentieth-century philosophy, wh ich is to say philosophy since Nietzsche, has contributed l i t t le to the discovery of the mind and does not provide a good foundation for it . Ironically, Nietzsche, who d id contribute a great deal to i t , is the only modern philosopher who has been approached as i f he were of interest mainly as a psychological case, whi le his psychology has been ignored. So deep is the reluctance of most philosophers to face up to the subject of this trilogy.
