ABSTRACT
RECONSTRUCTIONOFPASTclimaticfluctuationsinlow andhighlatitudesduringPleistoceneandearliertimeshas becomepossiblethroughthedevelopmentofKullenberg's devicefordeeplycoringthebedoftheocean.31Therearenow notonlymeansofdeterminingthetemperaturesprevailing inthesurfaceandbottomwatersoftheseaduringtheformation ofmanylayersofdepositindeep-seacores,butalsomeansof estimatingtheirchronometricages.Althoughtheseresearches arestillintheirinfancy,itisalreadyevidentthatachronologicalframeworkwillbecomeavailableintowhichthefragmentaryrecordsofPleistoceneeventsonlandwilleventually befitted.Thus,solongastheR.3ageofafossilhumanskull isreliablyestablished,itwillbepossibleintimetodateitin yearsbyconsultingaworld-widegeochronologicaltimetable basedonocean-coreresearches.
