THEGEOGRAPHICALEVOLUTIONoftheBalticregion duringPost-Glacialtimeshasalsobeenusedasabasisof relativechronology(seeChartA).85Withthemeltingofthe Fennoscandian86ice-sheetattheendofthePleistoceneperiod, thelandwasrelievedofagreatloadwhichhadbeenpressing itdowninaccordancewiththeprincipleofisosta.ry.87Released fromitsloadtheFennoscandianland-massbegantorise,more inthecentrewherethedepressionhadbeengreatest,anddecreasinglytowardsthemargins.Meanwhilethesea-levelwas risingonaccountoftheenormousvolumeofwateraddedto theoceansbythemeltingofice-sheetsinmanypartsofthe world.ThegeographyoftheBalticregionthusunderwenta rathercomplicatedevolution,determinedbytheinterplayof theunevenrisingofthelandandthesimultaneousrisingof sea-level.
