ABSTRACT

The Greeks gave us the term “epistemology,” referring to absolutely certain knowledge as episteme, while calling mere opinion doxa. In this chapter, I ask, what are the philosophical foundations on which futurists base their knowledge of the past, present, and future? After examining currently dominant views, I propose some principles for an epistemology for futures studies, that is, for a theory of knowledge for the truth claims about the past and present and, distinctively, for the truthlike statements about the future that futurists make.
