ABSTRACT

In the second part of the test, the raters were played a tape containing brief excerpts of 50 songs and asked to record their ratings for tempo. In experienced judges were used; all were either high school or college students in Gainesville, Florida. Except for one test, at least six judges rated each parameter. It was the first time they had heard songs from every culture area and song style in the world. As a precaution against contamination of the tests by the bias of the Cantometrics staff, this experiment was carried out un der the direction of Norman N. Markel in the Communication Sciences Laboratory at the University of Florida.
