ABSTRACT
CANTOMETRICS began with the hypothesis that song styles, whatever else their cultural function, provide a clear reflection of the personal perspective in societies-the ways in which people assert their presence, relate to one an other, and express some of their most broadly shared anxieties. A corollary to this general proposition is that the most important differentials in sex role will also be expressed in singing behavior. The evidence thus far ad duced supports both the major hypothesis and the corollary.
