ABSTRACT

IT IS heartening to see here the maturation of five years of intensively crea tive cooperation. It is rewarding to be able to look back over the discoveries of Alan Lomax's lifelong search for the meaning of the world's folk songs. This book is rightly Alan Lomax's, although the particular methods used in song and dance analysis were co-creations. The meaning discovered lies rightly in anthropology, in the study of human nature, human culture, and comparative social life and civilization.
