ABSTRACT

Larry Bird’s decision, and that of Karl Malone, and the decisions Michael Jordan makes repay scrutiny: a decision to work, a decision that reveals character, analytic decision-making by an African American male. What is extraordinary-and unfortunate-is that such decisions should need underscoring, surely a world in which they are normal is a more sensible one than the reverse. Basketball is more microscope than macrocosm, allowing examination of life under an alternative system, rather than reflecting the rules of the actually existing world order.
