ABSTRACT

Inconsideringtheseideals,then,weshallconcentrateattentionnot somuchonthefirstideal,whicharoseintherelativelyfamiliardebates culminatinginthecreationoftheFirstFrenchRepublicin1792.We shallfocusmoreonthelessunderstoodrivalidealsofnationaland socialrevolutionwhicharosetoservethemoreelusivegoalsofbrotherhoodandequality.Fraternalnationalismdominatedtheperiodofwar andterrorfrom1792through1794;egalitariancommunismappeared duringthesubsequentperiodofseemingstagnationundertheDirectory.

Thereplacementofamonarchybyarepublicwasthemajoraccomplishmentoftheinitialperiodoftherevolution.Inthecourseof1793, therepublicanidealwassealedinbloodbytheexecutionoftheking, ininkbythedraftingofaradicalconstitution,andintimebythe adoptionofarevolutionarycalendar.
