ABSTRACT
Thisdiscussionoftheinvolvementofwomenintherevolutionary traditionscanonlyscratchthesurfaceofacomplexproblem.Necessarilyexcludedfromourconsistentfocusonideologicalinnovatorsand leadersarethegreatbulkofrank-and-filerevolutionarieswhohappenedtobefemale,andoffeministswhoweremoreorlessrevolutionary.Atalmostanygivenpointthroughouttheperiodunderconsideration,somewomensimplysharedandechoedthepoliticaland economicdemandsbeingadvancedbymen.Otherssoughttochange onlythesocialroleofwomen,whowerestillconfinedtofixedand subordinaterolesinthepatriarchalEuropeanfamilysystem.Theformer groupmoreorlesspassivelyacceptedtheagendasetbymalerevolutionaries;thelattergrouponlyoccasionallyandepisodicallyidentifiedwith thelargelymalerevolutionarymovement.
