ABSTRACT

Since the publication of the first edition of this book, a number of works specifically addressing the subject of farce as a distinct and worthy comic genre have appeared, as have many important studies in closely related fields and dealing with individual periods of farce-history. The most relevant and accessible are listed below, including recent editions of interesting classical farces, especially when these are available in English translation. Other recent information on texts of plays can be found above in the Introduction and notes, where I have also commented at more length on some issues arising from studies listed here. In the annotations which follow, I have attempted to give some concise guidance about the strengths (and any problems) of the works concerned.
