ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the concept of a good death. To determine the good death, researchers investigated how people want to be cared for at the end of their lives. They identified five goals for quality end-of-life care. They are to (1) avoid inappropriately prolonged dying, (2) to strengthen relationships with loved ones, (3) to relieve the burden on their loved ones and (4) to receive adequate pain and symptom management. Family therapists can assist their clients by educating families with a dying member concerning these wishes.
