ABSTRACT
ALL FAMILIES in our American culture are expected to start with a marriage. To this marriage each partner brings his individual heritage, earlier family experiences, cultural expectations and values—the sum of the personal qualities that constitute his individuality. The strength the marital partners put into the marriage structure in the beginning stage of the family cycle is a major determinant for the effectiveness of each succeeding stage.
