ABSTRACT

Women are coming into human relation, developing human characteristics, being known not merely as female relatives, but as personal and social relatives, they need names for the same reason that men need them. Perhaps the latest wholesale adoption of sirnames was when the Jews of Germany were compelled by law to take to themselves names other than their tribal ones. Women, being female belongings, needed no badge save that of the man to whom they belonged. When they left their father's possession, when he gave this woman to be married to this man, she took the name of her new owner, naturally. They seem to have been limited, too, to certain classes of natural objects, judging by all the Rose-trees, Lily-trees, Green-trees, High-trees; all the Rose-mountains, Green-mountains, and High-mountains; all the Fine-golds and Fine-silvers; the Gold-stones, Silver-stones, Ruby-stones, and Diamond-stones among them.
