ABSTRACT
In an ambiguous manner Jews are conceived as a “free” people—free from those conventions that ensure the continuous function of the social mechanism. This notion of perverted freedom seems to entail exemption not only from all moral obligations but also from the whole set of mores guiding the conduct of social life.
