ABSTRACT
Human beings in society are not governed by coercion alone. Only in quite extraordinary cases, often of very limited duration, are relations of groups and individuals based on physical power relationships alone. Even periods such as Asiatic Despotism or ancient slave society, in which a clear master-slave relationship is present, cannot be explained solely by reference to the power apparatus the rules had at their disposal. Such a theory would remain purely mechanistic.
