The Context of the Czech Narratives

ByVáclav Havel, Jan K. Coetzee, Lynda Gilfillan, Otakar Hulec

The place was the former Czechoslovakia, and the time just after World War II, when the world seemed to hold its breath as old ideologies breathed their last, and new ones gathered strength. As the Nazi tanks and uniforms disappeared from the streets of towns and villages, those of the Red Army took their place. For many, the Slav brothers from the East were hailed as liberators who would help the besieged Czechoslovakians ensure that the hated Germans never again set foot on their soil.
