ABSTRACT

It is clear that drug use and delinquency tend to co-occur (Bachman, Johnston, and O’Malley 1981; Elliott and Huizinga 1984; Kaplan 1980; Clayton and Tuchfeld 1982; Brook, Lukoff, and Whiteman 1980). According to the common cause model, both drug use and delinquency may be the result of some common cause. It may be that some underlying factor, whether intrapersonal or interpersonal, leads some adolescents to use drugs and also become involved in delinquent acts. According to Robins and Wish (1977), drug use and delinquency may represent a syndrome that reflects an underlying conduct disorder. In a related vein, Jessor and Jessor (1977) refer to a deviant lifestyle, whereas Hawkins and Weis (1985) point to common social developmental processes as the underlying cause of drug use and delinquency.
