ABSTRACT

Herbert A. Otto has made an effort to synthesize into his technique some of the most therapeutic methods, including the work of such psychoanalysts as Franz Alexander and Lawrence Kubie, together with the existential analysts Rollo May and Ludwig Binswanger. A holistic treatment program is concerned not only with obtaining optimal gains in the therapeutic sessions through utilization of a discrete set of concepts, but is equally concerned with utilizing the patient's life span outside the office as a means of achieving therapeutic gains. This includes helping the patient to become actively involved in making planned use of his living environment, his interpersonal environment, and his vocational setting in order to achieve growth. The basic framework and methods of a holistic treatment program gradually emerged as a consequence of findings from the Human Potentialities Research Project at the University of Utah.
