ABSTRACT
When Christopher Columbus arrived in the tiny cay of Guanahani in the Bahamas, he conducted a ceremony and took possession of the newly “discovered” lands in the name of the sponsors of his voyage, the Spanish Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. Columbus’ ritual of possession was not a random act. He was following accepted Christian principles which were the only available legal guarantees to Spain’s ownership of the newly discovered lands.
