ABSTRACT
The destiny of the island of Cuba had been ruled by Spain since its discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Because of its privileged geographic location, Cuba had become Spain’s distribution center in the New World and strong bonds had been formed between Cuba and Spain. It would be difficult and quite painful to remove those ties.
