Spain’s loss of South and Central American colonies had an extraordinary impact on the histories of Spain, Cuba, and the United States. It thus seems fitting to devote a chapter to review the struggle for independence of the countries we now call Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.
