ABSTRACT

In July 1973, Thai Border Patrol Police announced the arrest of one of the biggest opium-heroin tycoons in Southeast Asia’s Golden Triangle: Law Sik Han of Kokang State, Burma. Law’s empire alone was purported to account for one-third of the world’s illicit drugs. Although probably an exaggerated estimate, the effect of his arrest nevertheless sent drug prices soaring in the world market and severely disrupted Asian smuggling networks.
