Economic growth has been the source of debate and discussion since at least 1776, when moral philosopher Adam Smith wrote his classic treatise on economics, The Wealth of Nations. Smith, of course, was concerned with the wealth of nations rather than of cities. Nevertheless, his work laid the foundation for contemporary economic analysis of development and what constitutes growth.
