The Drug War and the Growth of the Drug Economy
Governments on all levels have mounted an impressive campaign against illicit drugs for decades. Earlier enforcement efforts, however, paled in comparison to that mounted in the 1980s. In 1982, the federal government allocated a mere $3 billion to the War. By 1990, federal expenditures had ballooned to over $10 billion. To help finance state, local, and federal drug law enforcement efforts, over $1 billion in assets were seized by law enforcement personnel from 1985 to 1990. These efforts represent the most recent version of the nation’s commitment to the War on Drugs.
