ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on organizational theories of compliance relations and courtroom workgroups to explore the ways in which drug courts involve offenders in the justice process. It describes organizational strategies for involving participants and the nature of the resultant involvement of offenders in the drug court program. Amitai Etzioni theorizes organizational compliance relations as consisting of two parts: the type of power adopted by the organization to induce compliance, and the "orientation of the subordinated actor to the power applied". The goal of drug courts, not unlike other types of courts, is to prevent the individual from reoffending. Drug courts, however, were founded on the belief that the most effective way to reduce recidivism among drug offenders is to provide comprehensive treatment for drug addictions. The chapter provides support for Etzioni's assertion that normative power can result in moral involvement.
