ABSTRACT

This study was initiated by the Narcotics Treatment Administration in Washington, D.C., and the Special Action Office for Drug Abuse Prevention. It was to determine the effectiveness of the Narcotics Treatment Administration’s programs for treating heroin addicts and how post-treatment behavior was affected by the type of treatment modality and length of time out of treatment. Sponsorship of the study was shifted from the Special Action Office for Drug Abuse Prevention to the National Institute on Drug Abuse when the Federal Government’s drug functions were reorganized. The initial study effort began on June 23, 1974, and concluded on February 28, 1975. A second phase of the study was conducted between July 1, 1975, and January 31, 1976; this resulted in a more refined analysis of the data.
