ABSTRACT

Spontaneous democracy, as we have pictured it, is far from absolute. Pioneers are common men or men estranged from their native background, and they are individualists, ready to face danger and hard work, who claim no privileges but insist on independence. They are ambitious persons and reject socialism as a nursing home for invalids. Revolutionary democracy, on the contrary, instinctively accepts the leadership of other persons or of a single dictator, but looks to equality and unanimity in the status and minds of all members of the community. The dictator is thought of as the impartial protector and father of all the people. There is therefore equality in this kind of democracy but no liberty.
