ABSTRACT

To steal a line from a former NBC nightly newscaster, Brian Williams, “there is not a single day that goes by that a story about human conflict does not appear in our newspapers.” Why do newspapers across the country and the world cover human strife with such constancy? The short and simple answer is obviously that the topic of human division and discord is always “newsworthy.” And like all short and simple answers, this one raises a question. What exactly makes an event newsworthy?
