ABSTRACT
C alling the years between 1750 and 1850 traditional does not mean that medicine had remained unchanged since the ancient Greeks; certainly there was an evolution of medical ideas over that millennium and a half. But pre-1850 medicine was very different from what would come later. Our point of departure is an examination of these traditional practitioners, doctors who were often ruinously incompetent and aggressively meddlesome.
