ABSTRACT
When homosexuals began appearing before government officials to be married, the sight should have prompted the country’s heterosexual majority to ponder just how much they themselves had done to de-nature wedlock. It also should have occasioned much-needed reflection on how reflexively many Americans—straight and gay— now routinely turn to government to satisfy their own needs, not to discharge their duties. American attitudes were once quite different.
