From a paper presented at the meetings of the American Psychological Association, September 3-7, 1971. Jane R. Mercer is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Riverside. She has directed an extensive program of research into different aspects of the sociology of education, with particular emphasis on problems of mental retardation, the role of testing in schools, and issues of racial integration in the schools.
