Hughes is Professor of Sociology at Boston College and previously taught at the University of Chicago and Brandeis University. His best known book is French Canada in Transition (University of Chicago, 1963), in collaboration with Helen McGill; and his many important papers are collected in The Sociological Eye (Aldine, 1971). He is a past president of the American Socological Association, has been an honorary president of the Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
