Reprinted from American Sociological Review 30, no. 1 (February 1965): 5-14. Albert K. Cohen is Professor of Sociology at the University of Connecticut. He has specialized in deviant behavior theory and research, and research on lower class behavior. He is the author of an influential book, Delinquent Boys (Free Press, 1955), which began a major réévaluation of sociological theories of delinquency, and of many other articles dealing with delinquency, social disorganization, and deviant behavior generally. He has summed up his views about deviance theory in Deviance and Control (Prentice-Hall, 1966).
