ABSTRACT

This chapter shows the calculations of the intrinsic rate of population growth and age distribution data and supplement that calculation by looking at simulations based on the !Kung fertility and mortality parameters. After extracting useful information from these simulations, it considers how the simulations must be modified in order to represent adequately the internal features in addition to the external features of size, growth, and age distribution. The chapter starts the analysis by multiplying the age-specific fertility rates by a constant that represents the proportion of all births that are female. It focuses on the simulation of fertility and the interaction of mortality and fertility in producing the population size trajectory, indices of population growth, and the age distribution. To simulate fertility, AMBUSH requires a minimum of three parameters namely age distribution, level of fertility and number of attempts at childbirth. The analysis does not permit us to state with any confidence how great the errors in age estimation have been.
