ABSTRACT

Subhas Chandra Bose was born on January 23, 1897 into a Bengali family in Cuttack in what is now Orissa. Bose’s parents had moved to Cuttack from Calcutta. Years later, the family resettled in Calcutta— from the provinces to the metropolis of British rule. At the time of Bose’s birth, Cuttack was part of the presidency of Bengal. From 1905 to 1911, Cuttack was added by the colonial powers to a new presidency consisting of West Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa that, from 1911 to 1935, consisted only of Bihar and Orissa. The Government of India Act of 1935, which brought India a limited degree of autonomy and Indians a limited say in their own affairs, gave Cuttack to the now separate presidency of Orissa (Bose 1948: 2). Since Indian independence, the city, which lies southwest of Calcutta, has been part of the state of Orissa.
